Leopold Bloom Art Award 2021

Leopold Bloom Art Award, a contemporary art recognition, was founded ten years ago, in 2011 by an Irish couple, Mary McLoughlin and John Ward, who came into contact with the Hungarian contemporary art scene as collectors and as art transport professionals. The aim of the biennial award is to strenghten the presence of Hungarian art in an international arena. The prize is ten thousand euros, which – in addition to the recognition – is used by the winner to fund a foreign exhibition. The award is named after the protagonist of James Joyce’s world-famous novel, symbolizing the values of Ulysses and art in general: internationalism, independence, cultural relations.

This year’s finalists are Nikolett Balázs, Roland Farkas, Olga Kocsi, Gábor Koós and Eszter Szabó.

The organizers of the prize curate an exhibition presenting the works of the finalists, which will be hosted this year by Q Contemporary, a newly opened private museum on Andrássy Avenue with a focus on Central and Eastern European art. The final decision will be announced by the jury after personal meetings with the artists and studio visits, at the opening of the finalists’ exhibition on September 18, which will also be the gala award ceremony.
