Born in 1989 in Chuguev, Ukraine, Roman Mikhaylov graduated with a Master’s degree from the Painting Department of Kharkiv State Academy of Design & Art.

Roman’s art explores contemporary social and political issues, such as the 2013-2014 revolution in Ukraine. His installation works are as intense as the themes he presents: his “Spirit of Freedom” series (2014) made use of burning tyres, while the “Burn of the Reality” series employed layers of burnt papers. In addition to installations, he creates photo and video works, drawings and paintings.

He has exhibited solo in Ukraine (Lavra Gallery, Kyiv 2017), Russia (GogolFest’15, Kiev 2015; Ukrainian House, Kiev 2015).

His work has been exhibited in numerous group shows in Budapest (Ludwig Museum 2018), London (Saatchi Gallery 2014), Kiev (Pinchuk Art Centre 2018; National Museum Mistetskyi Arsenal 2015; American House 2015), Kharkiv (Yermilov Centre 2015); and Vienna (Künstlerhaus 2014).

In 2015, Roman was nominated for the Pinchuk Art Prize and won the Best Installation prize at the Saatchi Gallery exhibition. He is collected by the Gryniov Foundation, Sergei Makhno Collection, Yuriy Kogutiak Collection, Zenko Foundation, Marat Guelman and several private collections in Montenegro. He lives and works in Kiev.
